Recycling

Brantford's recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials, the administrator of the common collection system and a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Ontario.

To request a Blue Box and for all other recycling inquires including a missed recycling collection residents are asked to contact Emterra’s customer service at 1-888-597-1541 or customercareont@emterra.ca moving forward. After December 31, 2024, blue boxes will no longer be available at the Mohawk Street Landfill.

Between January 1 and December 31, 2025, there will be no changes to your collection day or the acceptable materials in your blue box. The two sort system (paper products in one bin and containers in the other) will remain in place. The materials previously accepted as part of the recycling program will continue to be collected. For a list of acceptable materials, collection schedules/set out times, and more, please visit the Circular Materials website

What is the Blue Box Transition Program?

In 2016, the Government of Ontario introduced the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, initiating a transition to a new province-wide recycling system. This transition will take place from July 2023 to December 2025, shifting responsibility for the Blue Box Program from municipalities to product producers.

Who will be responsible for Blue Box Collection?

July 2023, companies that produce Blue Box materials sold in Ontario are responsible for collecting and recycling these materials. These producers, such as Amazon, Walmart, Nestlé, and Coca-Cola, will collaborate through Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). The approved administrator for the new collection system is Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system across Ontario.

How will the program look in 2026 once the transition is complete?
In 2026, the City of Brantford will be fully transitioned to full extended producer responsibility for blue box materials. Ontarians will be able to recycle more types of materials, and this list of materials will be the same across Ontario for the first time.
Can I still bring Blue Box materials to the landfill?
Residents can continue to bring the same blue box materials to the Mohawk Street Landfill located at 20 Morrison Road until December 31, 2025.
Will this affect multi-residential properties?

Multi-residential properties that currently receive curbside collection will not be affected by the transition.

Multi-residential properties in the province that receive private blue box collection and/or multi-residential properties that did not have blue box collection prior to August 15, 2019, will become eligible for free blue box collection through the producer responsibility program as of January 1, 2026.

Newly constructed multi-residential properties that open in 2025 are eligible for service and do not need to wait until 2026.

No plastic bags

Please do not bag your recyclables.

Leave items loose and empty in your recycling bins.

Cardboard boxes

Flatten and tie large cardboard boxes into bundles no larger than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm (30" x 30" x 8") and place securely beside or between your blue boxes.

Recycling on windy days

Follow these steps to prevent litter in your neighbourhood on windy days:

  • Put your waste at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the morning of your collection day, instead of the night before
  • Stack blue boxes by placing heavier items on top of loose papers
  • Don't overfill blue boxes with loose materials
  • Put garbage bags on the curb instead of garbage cans; garbage cans are more likely to blow around
