Volunteers are the heart of our community. The City of Brantford is grateful for the passion and dedication of our volunteers. They make their community a better place to live, work, study and play. 

Volunteering is a great way to support your community, earn volunteer hours, meet new people, and build new skills. At the City of Brantford there are many volunteer opportunities available. Whether it’s assisting with special events, supporting your local Neighbourhood Association, helping out at an historic site, or supporting a City program, there is something for everyone.

Below are a number of ways you can GET INVOLVED at the City of Brantford:

Volunteer Committee Member

Brantford City Council relies on its Advisory Committees and Task Forces to fill an important role in our community. If you are interested in joining one of the City's Committees please visit our Committees and Boards page for more information and a list of available opportunities.

Brantford's Canada Day (July 1)

The success of Brantford's Canada Day event is made possible with the help of our amazing volunteers. When you volunteer for Brantford's Canada Day you will receive a keepsake t-shirt and community service and high school volunteer hours if applicable. Opportunities include:

  • set-up and take-down
  • clean-up
  • information tent
  • Green Team (recycling and organic waste diversion)
  • other various duties

Get involved by submitting a Canada Day Volunteer Application Form. Applicants must be available to attend mandatory training at Lions Park Auditorium at 20 Edge Street.

Brantford New Year's Eve Celebration (December 31)

Volunteer to be a part of Brantford's New Year's Eve Celebration at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts (88 Dalhousie Street) and Harmony Square (89 Dalhousie Street) on December 31. Community Service and High School Volunteer hours can be applied upon request. 

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • set-up and take-down
  • clean-up
  • information tent
  • other various duties

Let's Clean our City - Community Clean Up event (April)

Cleaning up litter is important to the health and vitality of the community and the Grand River. The City of Brantford hosts an annual Clean Brantford initiative in honour of Earth Day each year in April. Residents are encouraged to help Clean our City by collecting litter in their neighbourhoodsalong the trail networks and Grand River, and around the community. Clean-up kits are available. Registration is required.

Leaf and Snow Buddies (fall and winter season)

The City of Brantford has partnered with The Neighbourhood Alliance of Brantford and local Neighbourhood Associations to provide neighbours in need of help raking leaves and/or shovelling snow with neighbouring volunteers. For questions related to the Leaf/Snow Buddy program, please email volunteer@brantford.ca

If you, or someone you know, is a senior (65 or older) or has a medical condition or disability and needs help raking or shovelling snow learn how you can register at www.Brantford.ca/Windrow.

Movies in the Square (summer months)

Movies in the Square is a popular family-friendly event that takes place in Harmony Square (89 Dalhousie Street) on Thursdays during the summer months. Community Service and High School Volunteer hours can be applied upon request.

Flood Hero - Outdoor Ice Rinks (winter months)

Neighbourhood rinks cannot operate without the efforts of our amazing volunteers who keep them operating throughout the winter months. Please consider being a Flood Hero to give back to your neighbourhood to support valuable outdoor recreation opportunities in the winter season. For questions, please email volunteer@brantford.ca

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Rink flooding
  • Rink set-up and take-down
  • Snow removal

Parade After Party (November)

Brantford's Parade After Party takes place in Harmony Square (89 Dalhousie Street) the last Saturday in November each year. This event brings families and friends together for a night of free holiday activities following the Santa Claus Parade. Volunteers must be ages 14 or over to apply. High school Community Service Hours are available upon request. 

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • letters to Santa
  • photo booth
  • Elves in the Santa Claus parade
  • treat distribution
  • set up and tear-down

Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts (year-round)

The Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts offers many volunteer opportunities and training is provided. This is a great way to complete your community service hours. To volunteer you must be ages 14 or over. 

Opportunities include:

  • Merchandise sales
  • Ticket Collector
  • Usher

Scare in the Square (October)

Volunteer for the annual Scare in the Square event that takes place the first Friday and Saturday in October each year. Enjoy being part of the fun fall and Halloween themed activities happening at Harmony Square (89 Dalhousie Street) and Mohawk Park (51 Lynnwood Drive). Volunteers must be available to attend mandatory virtual training.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • HOWL-o-ween Dog Parade
  • Casper’s Craft Corner
  • Escape Rooms
  • Wagon Ride
  • Paranormal Tours
  • Roller skating sign-up
  • Set up and tear down 
  • Various other duties

Brantford Youth Council

Brantford Youth Council is a group of local youth volunteers (ages 14- 19) who offer a chance for other youth to be involved in their community. Youth will learn and develop leadership skills as well as have an opportunity to provide input into the programs offered for them.

Newcomer Connections

If you are new to the City, volunteering is a great way to meet people and learn about our community and can be a good path to finding employment. Volunteering  is also about learning new skills, meeting people that have similar interests, making new friends, and getting to know your neighbours.
