Blue Box Transition Program
Beginning January 1, 2025, the Ontario Blue Box Program will undergo changes as Circular Materials takes over its management in an effort to standardize and enhance recycling services.
What is the Blue Box Transition Program? |
In 2016, the Government of Ontario introduced the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, initiating a transition to a new province-wide recycling system. This transition will take place from July 2023 to December 2025, shifting responsibility for the Blue Box Program from municipalities to product producers. |
Who will be responsible for Blue Box Collection? |
July 2023, companies that produce Blue Box materials sold in Ontario are responsible for collecting and recycling these materials. These producers, such as Amazon, Walmart, Nestlé, and Coca-Cola, will collaborate through Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). The approved administrator for the new collection system is Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system across Ontario. |
When will the City of Brantford Transition and how will this affect residents? |
The City of Brantford will transition to the new Blue Box regulatory framework on January 1, 2025 and be managed by Circular Materials. Between January 1 and December 31, 2025, there will be no changes to your collection day or the acceptable materials in your blue box. The two sort system (paper products in one bin and containers in the other) will remain in place. The materials previously accepted as part of the recycling program will continue to be collected. |
How will the program look in 2026 once the transition is complete? |
In 2026, the City of Brantford will be fully transitioned to full extended producer responsibility for blue box materials. Ontarians will be able to recycle more types of materials, and this list of materials will be the same across Ontario for the first time. |
Who do I call if I have questions about Blue Box Collection after January 1, 2025? |
Starting January 1, 2025, please contact Emterra at 1-877-597-1541 or customercareont@emterra.ca for all your recycling collection inquiries. Emterra can be contacted for missed collections, recycling questions, and replacement of recycling carts. Please visit circularmaterials.ca/brantford to lean more. |
Can I still bring Blue Bin materials to the landfill? |
Customers can continue to bring the same blue box materials to the Mohawk Street Landfill located at 20 Morrison Road until December 31, 2025. |
Will this affect multi-residential properties? |
Multi-residential properties that currently receive curbside collection will not be affected by the transition. Multi-residential properties in the province that receive private blue box collection and/or multi-residential properties that did not have blue box collection prior to August 15, 2019, will become eligible for free blue box collection through the producer responsibility program as of January 1, 2026. Newly constructed multi-residential properties that open in 2025 are eligible for service and do not need to wait until 2026. |
