Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Downtown Brantford Revitalization Project?

The goal of the streetscaping improvements is to create a Downtown that is attractive, vibrant, and safe for users and provides the infrastructure needed to accommodate expected growth. The Downtown Revitalization project improves walkability, accessibility, and underground infrastructure to allow for development while accommodating all transportation modes and increasing pedestrian capacity. The project is required because of the aging sanitary, sewer, and water mains underground. To support the thriving development in the downtown area, it's essential to replace and expand the existing infrastructure that has reached its end of life.

What is the boundary for the Downtown Revitalization Project?

The scope of work indicated in the original MCEA consisted of reconstruction of Colborne and Dalhousie Streets between Brant Avenue and Clarence Street, as well as the intersecting north and south streets. As the construction involves significant underground utility work, before any of the work can occur in the core downtown area, the existing deep trunk sanitary sewer needs to be realigned from Colborne Street to Icomm Drive.

The scope of work required to complete the work on Icomm Drive has been added to the Downtown Revitalization project as it must be completed prior to any other work beginning. The work on Icomm Drive will occur between Colborne Street and Clarence Street South and will restore the street like-for-like when complete.

How long can we expect road closures in the Downtown?

The construction of the Downtown project is expected to last up to 5 years. However, the project consultant is currently working on phasing the project in such a way that the road in front of the downtown businesses will not be closed for the entire duration of 5 years. As soon as the phasing plan is finalized, the City will share the details of which streets will be under construction each year. Generally, construction is scheduled to take place between early April and late November of each year. You can rest assured that the construction will not be taking place year-round. For ongoing updates on road closures, please visit our project website at Brantford.ca/NewDowntown.

Will there be any support for businesses during construction?

A dedicated office will be set up on the first floor of City Hall to serve as a one-stop shop for all information related to the downtown project. Staff members will be available during office hours to answer any questions from community members or businesses.

Visit the Downtown Revitalization Office with any questions. We are open every Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., by appointment. Email our Downtown Revitalization Ambassador to book a meeting at cobdowntown@brantford.ca.

Throughout the project, we will be making extensive communication efforts to help businesses during the construction period. Businesses can always reach out to the Downtown Brantford Business Improvement Area for assistance. Although there will be some disruptions in vehicle traffic, our top priority is to ensure access, and we will sign and maintain pedestrian access for all businesses.

Will my business be compensated by the City during these disruptions?

Businesses will not receive monetary compensation from the City, but City staff will offer support with communications efforts wherever possible.
