City hosts Registry Week: Coming Together to support people experiencing housing instability

BRANTFORD, ON – Over 240 people attended the City of Brantford’s Registry Week: Coming Together event on April 26 to receive services and support on their pathway to improved well-being. City staff, community organizations and volunteers came together to provide people experiencing homelessness and housing instability with a free hot meal, clothing, harm reduction services, haircuts, personal care, housing application support and more.

“We are so grateful to all of the dedicated volunteers and local organizations that stepped up to bring this much needed event to our community,” says Mary Musson, Director of Housing and Homelessness, City of Brantford. “By hosting this event, we are able to help individuals access the services and resources they need all in one place and to make the important connections to community supports and resources.”

Over 20 community organizations participated in the event to facilitate connections and offer resources for those in need. Shallow Creek Academy of Hair design attended with ten student hair stylists to provide hair washes and trims at no cost. Two partner agencies, the Brantford Food Bank and St. Andrew’s Soup for the Soul Program, worked diligently to provide meals and takeaway snack bags to participants.

This event was coordinated to occur jointly with the 2023 Point in Time (PiT) Count. The PiT Count is a strategy to help determine the extent of homelessness in a community at a single point in time and allows for a better understanding of the nature and extent of homelessness in a community. Outreach volunteers completed surveys throughout the City of Brantford and across designated locations within the County of Brant. The information gathered from the surveys will help funders, system planners, and service providers make adjustments and continuous improvements to community-wide responses to homelessness.
