BRANTFORD, ON – Today, the City of Brantford conducted the Brantford-Brant Point-in-Time (PiT) Count as part of a Canada-wide effort to enumerate and survey individuals in sheltered and unsheltered locations to determine how many people are experiencing homelessness on any given night. The information collected from the PiT Count will be used to update housing stability programs and community support systems, including the healthcare system, with the ultimate goal of ending homelessness in our community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PiT Count originally scheduled for last year at this time was cancelled. Given the year long delay, and now more urgent requirement for this data, the count was significantly modified from years prior to ensure it was conducted as safely as possible while respecting guidelines and orders related to the current stay-at-home order. This included the use of essential community outreach staff following and reinforcing strict safety protocols, rather than community volunteers, and the inability to hold a community gathering. The city partnered with Grand River Community Health Centre to ensure that all COVID-19 protocols were in place and outreach workers were properly trained.

This is the City’s third time conducting the PiT Count, the results of which will be made public. The Brantford-Brant PiT Count is funded by Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy to prevent and reduce homelessness and will build on data from previous years to better understand homelessness in our community. The information gathered from these surveys will support governments, service providers, community groups and funders with the information needed to plan appropriate programs to address and measure our progress in ending homelessness.
