Ted Beare sign unveiling

BRANTFORD, ON – On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the City of Brantford proudly hosted family, friends, and admirers of renowned local sports journalist Ted Beare at the Steve Brown Sports Complex, to unveil new Ted Beare Ball Diamond signage celebrating Ted’s extraordinary legacy in sports journalism. Even after his retirement in 1992, Ted continued to write and share his stories, authoring two books and contributing to The Expositor until his passing in January 2011.

Ted Beare began his career at The Brantford Expositor in 1950, becoming Sports Editor by 1953, and maintaining the role with distinction for over four decades. His informative and entertaining reporting brought local sports to life for his readers, earning him numerous accolades, including four Western Ontario Newspaper Association awards and two runner-up recognitions.

Throughout his career, Ted chronicled the achievements of local athletes, from up-and-coming players in house leagues to Olympians and major league players. His insightful storytelling captured the essence of sportsmanship and community spirit, making him a beloved figure in Brantford.

Ted Beare’s legacy extends beyond his award-winning journalism. He was a dedicated member of various sports recognition committees, including the Frank Tomlin Memorial Award selection committee and the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition selection committee. In 1994, his significant impact on local sports was formally acknowledged with his induction into the Sports Hall of Recognition.

Ted’s contributions were further celebrated through numerous honours, including a Commemorative Medal for the 125th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 1992, an Award of Merit from the Walter Gretzky CNIB Celebrity Golf Classic in 1998, and a dedicated evening in his honour organized by the Arnold Anderson Sports Fund in 2004.

The Ted Beare Ball Diamonds at Steve Brown Sports Complex will serve as a permanent reminder of Ted’s legacy and lasting impact on our community.
