The City of Brantford launches new Youth Strategy

Youth walking across rainbow walk

BRANTFORD, ON – At their Committee of the Whole meeting held on January 11, 2022, Council unanimously approved the City’s Empowering Youth, The City of Brantford’s Youth Strategy (“Empowering Youth Strategy”), a new municipal youth strategy that outlines actions to enhance opportunities for youth engagement in Brantford.

“The City of Brantford’s Empowering Youth Strategy demonstrates our commitment to fostering a community where youth can thrive,” says Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “We are excited to continue to work with our dynamic network of community partners, including the Brantford Youth Council, to lead, support, and advocate for initiatives that amplify youth leadership and voices.”

The Empowering Youth Strategy was developed through extensive community engagement with local youth groups, youth advocates, and youth-serving agencies. Through digital surveys, virtual discussion groups, and pop-up brainstorming sessions, three priority areas and twenty-two actions were identified to guide the City of Brantford’s work to empower local youth and continue supporting a youth-friendly community. Over 1,300 local youth, parents or guardians, and organizations dedicated to youth shared their experiences and visions to inform the priorities and actions of the Empowering Youth Strategy.

Some of the actions included in the strategy are increasing the number of youth visiting community centres, recreational facilities, and outdoor amenities, as well as increasing the number of youth who participate in community programs. The strategy also aims to add to the number of programs that are offered in partnership with community organizations and increase participation in leadership and mentorship opportunities.
