Public encouraged to share feedback regarding SC Johnson rezoning matter
BRANTFORD, ON – At their meeting held on September 26th, 2023 Brantford City Council unanimously endorsed a resolution showing their support for SC Johnson and their apprehensions regarding the possible reclassification of the private property located at 58 Morrell Street. The resolution highlights SC Johnson as one of the longest-standing family-owned enterprises in North America, with a presence in Brantford since 1920. Council commended SC Johnson for embodying the principles of corporate responsibility upon which the City of Brantford was established, deeply embedding itself within our community through acts of philanthropy, corporate citizenship and volunteerism.
Furthermore, Council conveyed their sincere gratitude to SC Johnson for their continued substantial support of our local economy and the overall well-being of our residents. In the last twenty years, SC Johnson has generously contributed over $34 million to numerous community initiatives, including the Brant Community Health Care System, the SC Johnson Trail, and the SC Johnson Community Centre.
Council's resolution also stipulates that The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT), responsible for addressing this land use planning issue, receive and take into account the input and feedback from The City of Brantford concerning the reclassification of 58 Morrell Street. Specifically, it emphasizes that the City of Brantford's Council would not have approved the proposed rezoning of the private property at 58 Morrell Street.
Public opportunities to provide feedback
In addition to sharing Council’s position with the OLT, the City is providing opportunities for members of the public to provide their feedback on this matter as follows:
- Attend a Special Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting to be held at Brantford City Hall Council Chambers (58 Dalhousie St.) on October 17th at 6:00 p.m. Please note that this is not a statutory hearing to reconsider a rezoning application, but rather, an open opportunity to hear from members of our community about the impacts the rezoning application may have on our city.
This meeting will be held in a “public open house” format and those who wish to attend in person to speak at the meeting do not have to register in advance. Only those who wish to attend virtually will be required to register in advance to obtain a link to join the meeting. Virtual registration can be accommodated by either emailing clerks@brantford.ca or visiting the City Council calendar page at calendar.brantford.ca/meetings.
- The City also encourages that letters and/or comments from the public be emailed to communications@brantford.ca by October 31, 2023.
All public feedback received to date and until October 31, 2023, through various ways to interact with the City, will be collected and consolidated into a Clerks Report on Communications and sent to the OLT by the City Clerk for their consideration in context with a decision related to the rezoning of the private property at 58 Morrell Street.
