Public encouraged to provide feedback regarding SC Johnson rezoning matter
BRANTFORD, ON – At their meeting held on September 26th, 2023 Brantford City Council unanimously approved a resolution in support of SC Johnson and their concerns about the potential rezoning of the privately purchased property located at 58 Morrell Street. The resolution characterizes SC Johnson as one of North America's oldest family-owned businesses, having been in Brantford since 1920, and a company that exemplifies the principles of corporate citizenship upon which the City of Brantford was founded, ingraining itself into the very fabric of our community through philanthropy, volunteerism and overall stewardship.
Council also expressed their sincere appreciation to SC Johnson for their ongoing significant contributions to our local economy, and overall well-being of our citizens. Over the past two decades, SC Johnson has generously donated more than $34 million towards various community projects, including the Brant Community Health Care System, the SC Johnson Trail, and the SC Johnson Community Centre.
The Council resolution further directs that The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT), who will hear and adjudicate this land use planning matter, be provided with and consider The City of Brantford’s input and feedback regarding the rezoning of 58 Morrell Street; and in particular, that the Council of the City of Brantford would not have approved the proposed rezoning of the private property at 58 Morrell Street.
Public opportunities to provide feedback
In addition to sharing Council’s position with the OLT, the City is providing opportunities for members of the public to provide their feedback on this matter as follows:
- Attend a Special Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting to be held at Brantford City Hall Council Chambers (58 Dalhousie St.) on October 17th at 6:00 p.m. Please note that this is not a statutory hearing to reconsider a rezoning application, but rather, an open opportunity to hear from members of our community about the impacts the rezoning application may have on our city.
This meeting will be held in a “public open house” format and those who wish to attend in person to speak at the meeting do not have to register in advance. Only those who wish to attend virtually will be required to register in advance to obtain a link to join the meeting. Virtual registration can be accommodated by either emailing clerks@brantford.ca or visiting the City Council calendar page at calendar.brantford.ca/meetings.
- The City also encourages that letters and/or comments from the public be emailed to communications@brantford.ca by October 31, 2023.
All public feedback received to date and until October 31, 2023, through various ways to interact with the City, will be collected and consolidated into a Clerks Report on Communications and sent to the OLT by the City Clerk for their consideration in context with a decision related to the rezoning of the private property at 58 Morrell Street.
