Physical Security Enhancements now in place in City’s Downtown
BRANTFORD, ON: On January 11, 2021 the City of Brantford launched a pilot project that will see an expansion of the City's Physical Security Guard Services, featuring an enhanced 24/7 security presence in the downtown area, including all of the municipal facilities within the downtown and surrounding area.
The new Security Guard team will be equipped with a City-issued identification card, two-way communication equipment, a security vehicle and essential personal protection equipment. Patrol Guards and Supervisors will be certified and trained in non-violent crisis intervention, first aid and CPR, AED, naloxone administration, use of force, defensive tactics, management of resistive behaviour and de-escalation, handcuffs, batons, and sensitivity pertaining to marginalized communities.
While patrol routes and routines will remain confidential for security purposes, the security team will continually review and adapt all patrol routes and priorities to ongoing and trending security concerns discussed with stakeholders, including staff and management from various municipal departments, facilities and community partners.
Prior to the conclusion of the four-month Pilot Project, the City’s Facilities Management and Security Department will provide a Report to Council detailing the outcomes of the project, as well as recommendations with the objective to establish a more permanent corporate security approach moving forward.
“I’m pleased to see this initiative underway”, said Mayor Davis. “It is an important first step in helping reduce instances of disruptive crime such as thefts, that are unfortunately on the rise in some areas of the city. I’m confident that this approach to optimize and expand security services of City owned buildings into the downtown and surrounding areas will help to deter this type of disturbing activity.”
“Important to the success of this pilot project is working collaboratively with our community partners including, Brantford Police Services, Wilfrid Laurier Special Constable Service, the Downtown Brantford Business Association, the Brantford Public Library and others to help inform long term security solutions to achieve common goals”, said Lise Sordo, Director of Facilities Management and Security. “We expect that information collected as a result of the from the piolot program will inform the development of a more permanent solution in the future.”
