Over 1,200 residents participate in City’s Earth Day community cleanup

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is proud to announce that over 1,200 individuals, groups, neighbourhood associations, organizations and schools participated in the Let’s Clean Our City community cleanup in honour of Earth Day. Together we collected a whopping total of 420 kilograms of litter that was disposed of at the Mohawk Street Landfill between Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.

The City provided over 1,000 free cleanup kits to residents who were encouraged to collect litter in their neighbourhood and dispose of it in their regular garbage collection, while larger cleanups could bring their collected litter to one of five disposal areas located throughout the city. A total of 420 kilograms of litter was collected between the five disposal areas and taken to the Mohawk Street Landfill by City of Brantford Operational Services and Parks & Facilities Services staff.

The cleanup also included a contest whereby participants could submit photos for the chance to randomly be awarded prizes. The winners for each category are:

• Karleigh Csordas and The Moore Family each won a $50.00 gift card to the Brantford Farmers’ Market.
• Holmedale Neighbour Association and East Ward Echo Place Neighbourhood Association each won a $500.00 prize to be spent on an environmental initiative in their neighbourhood.
• Hindsight 20/20 and the Brant County Health Unit each won a $500.00 cash donation to a local charity of their choice.
• Major Ballachey, St. Theresa, Assumption College, Ecole Confederation, and Brier Park School each won countertop composters for their school.

Over 32 individuals, groups, neighbourhood associations, organizations and schools participated in the contest. The winners have been notified.

The Let’s Clean Our City campaign is a Clean Brantford initiative aimed at keeping the City free of litter. In January 2020, Brantford City Council approved the Clean Brantford initiative to encourage civic minded citizens to take personal responsibility for cleaning up the city.
