New pedestrian crossover to be installed in Brantford

Animated Pedestrian Crossover

BRANTFORD, ON – Brantford's first pedestrian crossover location is being installed on Spalding Drive. In partnership with Apotex Pharmachem Inc., the City is pleased to provide this new traffic feature that will assist residents while moving around our city.

All motorists are very strongly encouraged to watch for new “stop for pedestrian signs” on area roads. It’s important to remember that traffic in both directions must remain stopped until pedestrians have crossed the entire width of the road. It’s equally as important for pedestrians to remember that they must be sure that traffic has come to a complete stop before stepping off the sidewalk.

Pedestrian crossovers are designed for roads with a relatively low volume of traffic but a significantly high number of pedestrians who require a safe way to cross mid-block. All drivers, including cyclists, must stop and yield to pedestrians wishing to cross the road, and wait for them to completely reach the other side before driving.

Drivers and cyclists can be fined from $150 to $500 and 3 demerit points for failing to yield to pedestrians at pedestrian crossovers. Pedestrians can be fined $35 for moving into the path of a vehicle that is so close that it is impossible for the motorist to stop safely.

It is the responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians to understand and follow the rules of the road. Visit brantford.ca/Crossovers for more information on how to safely use pedestrian crossovers.
