BRANTFORD, ON – To mark the Provincial Day for Action Against Litter on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the City was pleased to host a community-led litter cleanup throughout downtown Brantford, followed by the official launch of a new Downtown Waste Depot, to exclusively service downtown businesses and residents, located at the corner of King Street and Dalhousie Street.

Approximately 15 bags of litter were collected by community volunteers during Tuesday’s litter clean up and disposed of in the new Downtown Waste Depot. Approved by City Council in March 2024, the new Depot has been strategically placed to facilitate convenient and easy waste disposal for residents and businesses in the downtown area.

The Depot installation, completed on May 1st, 2024, is a Waste Management System state-of-the-art solution designed to revolutionize waste disposal and recycling processes. The bins run 9 ft deep into the ground underneath the garbage, recycling and organic bins that make up the Depot, promoting sustainability and efficiency. To date, approximately 3,200 kilograms of waste has been deposited in the bins in only 2 weeks!

The installation of the Downtown Waste Depot goes hand in hand with the new waste collection schedule in the Downtown meant to improve the cleanliness of the streets. The new collection schedule effective May 1, 2024, is Monday to Saturday between 7:00am and 8:30am and requires residents and businesses to set out their waste only between the hours of 12:00am and 7:00am. These changes will ensure the streets are cleared of all garbage and waste promptly by 8:30am and that businesses and residents still have the opportunity to dispose of their waste at a central, convenient location outside of the set out times if needed.

"This installation is a major step forward in contributing to a cleaner downtown,” said Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “With the launch of our new waste depot, dedicated exclusively to the downtown, we're not just disposing of litter, we're doing it smarter and greener. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our Environmental Services team for their incredible efforts in getting this implemented so swiftly. Your hard work is what makes projects like this possible, and our city is better for it.”

"This initiative represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown Brantford," said Downtown Revitalization Champion and Ward 5 Councillor Mandy Samwell. “I applaud the collaborative efforts of our community members, City officials, and the Environmental Services team for their dedication to this important project. Your dedication is what's driving positive change in our community."

The implementation of the new Depot is aligned with the vision established in 'Brantford's Downtown Priority Plan: A Community Vision for the City Centre,' as well as the Downtown Revitalization project.
