Healthy Kids Bright Futures invites kids to get active and skip rope
BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford’s Healthy Kids Bright Futures initiative is encouraging kids to stay active by offering free skipping ropes to promote physical activity through a campaign titled “Has your child skipped rope today?” that is aimed at children 14 years and younger. The campaign highlights the benefits of active movement on childhood development and learning. Families can also win one of two $100 gift cards to Brant Sports Excellence by participating in the Healthy Kids Bright Futures photo contest.
“Just 10 minutes of physical activity a day can stimulate the brain, improve concentration, enhance problem-solving skills and strengthen memory,” says Bethany Letto, Community Initiatives Coordinator, City of Brantford. “As part of the Healthy Kids Bright Futures initiative, we are pleased to offer a free skipping rope to children in the City of Brantford.
The free skipping ropes are now available (while quantities last) at the following City facilities:
- Branlyn Community Centre, 238 Brantwood Park Rd
- Brantford Public Library - downtown, 173 Colborne St
- Brantford Public Library - St Paul’s Branch, 441 St Paul Ave
- City Hall, Customer Service Desk, 58 Dalhousie Street
- Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre, 333 Erie Avenue
- Laurier Brantford YMCA, 100 Water St
- T.B. Costain - SC Johnson Community Centre, 16 Morrell Street
- Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, 254 North Park Street (Pool Desk)
- Woodman Park Community Centre, 491 Grey Street
- Woodview Mental Health and Autism Services, 643 Park Rd N
- Woodview in the Square, 120 Colborne St, Unit 106-107
Children enrolled in City summer camps during the week of July 15 to 19 will also receive a free skipping rope and will participate in skipping activities as part of their camp experience.
Families are encouraged to enter the Healthy Kids Bright Futures photo contest by uploading a photo of their child being active and skipping rope to LetsTalkBrantford.ca/HealthyKids. Participants will have the chance to win one of two $100 gift cards to Brant Sports Excellence. The contest closes on August 31, 2024. Winners will randomly be drawn the week of September 2, 2024. The “Has your child skipped rope today?” campaign is part of the City’s Healthy Kids Bright Futures initiative that aims to support child development through activities and programs that can decrease vulnerability in 5 key areas identified in the Early Development Instrument (EDI).
