Construction sees significant growth in February

BRANTFORD, ON – Today, the City released its February 2020 Report on Construction Activity demonstrating a construction value of $21.359 million for 70 issued permits. The construction value in February is more than double the value attained for the month in 2019 and is the highest construction value for the month of February in the last five-years.

The largest increase occurred in the Multiple Residential (New) Sector of construction. A total of five building permits were issued for new multiple residential dwellings with a total construction value of $6.228 million, compared with February 2019, when there were no building permits issued. All five permits issued in the Sector were to Empire Pleasantview, for block townhouse units on Cooke Avenue.

Significant increases also occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. A total of thirty-six building permits were issued for new single detached dwellings, with a total construction value of $11.154 million, which is an increase over twenty-three building permits issued in February 2019 with a total construction value of $6.771 million.

Other noteworthy permits issued in February include a permit to complete interior alterations to Wilfrid Laurier University’s building, located at 111 Darling St, with a construction value of $0.200 million, and a permit to complete interior alterations to a medical clinic located at 225 Fairview Drive, with a construction value of $0.140 million.

The City’s year-to-date construction value of $60.950 million is more than double last year’s total of $23.696 million. For the year, a total of 219 building permits have been issued, which is an increase from 113 permits issued in 2019 over the same period.
