Cockshutt Bridge Maintenance – July-September, 2019
Between now and early fall, the City of Brantford together with the County of Brant will be conducting inspection and maintenance activities on the underside of the overhanging portion of the Cockshutt Bridge deck. This is in response to a small area of the concrete deck falling from the structure.
To ensure the public’s safety, the maintenance will include detailed inspections and any subsequent work required such as removal of loose (spalling) concrete.
While officials have deemed the bridge safe for use; pedestrians, boaters and other users of the Grand River are encouraged to exercise caution in the vicinity of the underside of the bridge until the maintenance work is completed. Signs warning pedestrians and river users of the potential risk for falling concrete will be posted at the west side of the parking lot and 100 to 150 m upstream and downstream of the bridge on the river’s edge.
Pedestrians are reminded that there are no City of Brantford or County of Brant sanctioned trails on land passing under this structure on either side of the river. The concrete spalls on the underside of the bridge do not pose a risk to vehicular traffic travelling over the structure on Erie Ave/Cockshutt Road.
While the inspection and maintenance work is being completed, full or partial lane closures and reduced availability of parking in the lot immediately to the east of the bridge (including a boat launch for the Grand River) may be required.
