City to introduce six new red light cameras to help make local roads safer

BRANTFORD, ON – As a Vision Zero city, the City of Brantford is pleased to introduce a red light camera program that aims to make local streets safer for residents and all road users. Camera installation will take place over the coming weeks and six red light cameras will all be operational at intersections by the end of January 2023.

Brantford City Council adopted the Vision Zero Road Safety Strategic Plan on April 27, 2021. The goal of Vision Zero is to eliminate all collisions that result in serious injuries or fatalities. Visit brantford.ca/VisionZero for more information on the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan.

Camera locations were determined by collision rate data and include:

  • Blackburn Drive at Veterans Memorial Parkway
  • Wayne Gretzky Parkway at Henry Street
  • Clarence Street at Dalhousie Street
  • Clarence Street at Icomm Drive      
  • Wayne Gretzky Parkway at Morton Avenue
  • Market Street at Wellington Street

It is unsafe and illegal for motorists to enter an intersection after the traffic signal light has turned red. The set fine for running a red light is $325. The fine is issued to the owner of the vehicle, regardless of who is driving the vehicle at the time of the offence.

The red light camera program is designed to modify aggressive driving behaviour and increase awareness of the dangers of running red lights. “Aggressive driving at intersections is extremely dangerous,” says David Ferguson, Manager of Traffic Services. “The red light camera program will help make our roads safer by targeting those drivers who choose to put other lives at risk.”

This type of traffic enforcement camera captures an image of a vehicle that enters an intersection in spite of the traffic signal indicating red. The camera automatically takes two photos of the vehicle, one entering and one proceeding through the intersection, and is used to assist authorities with enforcing traffic laws. While new to Brantford, red light camera programs have been in effect in municipalities in Ontario since 1998, and the City of Brantford Vision Zero Action Plan identifies the need for a red light camera program.
