City recognizes Emergency Preparedness Week

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford joins communities across Canada to recognize May 1 to 7, 2022 as Emergency Preparedness Week encouraging residents to take concrete actions that will better prepare themselves and their loved ones during emergencies. To help residents learn more about emergency preparedness and what it means to shelter in place, the Brantford Fire Department is offering residents a chance to win a 72-hour emergency go-bag through a photo contest online at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/EmergencyPreparedness. The contest opens on Monday, May 2 at 8:30 a.m. and will run until Saturday, May 7 at 11:59 p.m.

“It is so important that everyone understands their individual role in emergencies and does their part to prepare themselves,” says Kris Lutzi, Community Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Brantford. “We’re encouraging residents to take a big step for their safety and spend a few hours this week to make a plan and get an emergency kit that will prepare you for years ahead.”

By taking a few simple steps, everyone can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies such as floods, tornadoes, hazardous spills incidents and more. It is important to:

  • Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do.
  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, everyone needs some basic supplies. Residents may need to get by without access to power, food or water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
  • Stay informed – Sign up to receive alerts such as flood warnings from your local conservation authority and incoming extreme weather from various weather apps.
