City launches new online river flood zone map to help residents identify flood zones in Brantford

BRANTFORD, ON – Floods are the most common natural disaster in Canada, and their frequency and severity are increasing. It’s important for residents to be as prepared as possible in the event of a flood warning to help protect their homes, families, and communities.

To assist with this, the City of Brantford, in collaboration with the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), has introduced a new online mapping tool to help residents determine if their property is in a flood zone. The five flood zones in the mapping tool account for topography as well as river flow rates and align with flood warning messaging issued by the GRCA and emergency response officials. By identifying their property in relation to the flood zones, residents can assess their risk of flooding and take action to protect their home or business if necessary.

To find out if your property may be vulnerable to river flooding, please access the City of Brantford’s Mapping System. It should be noted that the flood zones may not be applied to ice jam incidents as they are not dependent on water flow rates.

Flood zones, as shown on the City of Brantford’s mapping system, currently apply only within the City of Brantford municipal boundary. Future updates to this online tool will expand these zones to include areas in neighbouring municipalities.

How to use the mapping tool

  1. Simply enter your address in the search bar to search for your home, business, or any location in the city
  2. Click on the GRCA Flood Zones layer under the layer list button in the top right and review the flood zones to note if your location falls within a designated flood zone.
  3. Use the tool to assess your risk and take proactive steps to protect your property.
