City kicks-off Brantford Pride Month

Brantford Pride Flag Raising

BRANTFORD, ON – Today, Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis was joined by Councillor Joshua Wall, Pride committee members Taylor Berzins and Christine Wildman and Tara Buchanan from The Bridge to raise the Brantford Pride Flag to kick off Brantford Pride Month. Raising the pride flag at City Hall shows Brantford’s commitment to equality, justice and spirit of inclusiveness to all of our citizens.

“Thank you to the organizers of Brantford Pride for their commitment to celebrate diversity and acceptance of the 2LSGBTQ+ community,” says Mayor Kevin Davis. “I am proud to proclaim the month of June as Brantford Pride Month on behalf of Council and I wish everyone a Happy Pride in Brantford.”

The Brantford Pride Committee and The Bridge Brant are working hard to make Brantford a more inclusive and safer environment for the local 2SLGBTQ+ community through the celebration of Pride and promotion of inclusivity. While in-person celebrations cannot take place at this time, the committee has organized a variety of virtual events to celebrate Brantford Pride month. The City will unveil its first Rainbow Crosswalk during Brantford Pride Month at Colborne and Market Street in front of the Brantford Public Library. The design will feature the Daniel Quasar Flag, which includes the rainbow colours to represent LGBT communities, black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LGBT communities of colour, and pink, light blue and white stripes which are used on the Transgender Pride Flag. This flag design is regarded as the most inclusive and was flown at Brantford City Hall for the first time in 2020.

“I am thankful to the 2SLGBTQ+ community, City staff and Council for helping make this initiative possible,” says Councilor Joshua Wall. “Our City is one of love, understanding, and acceptance where all are welcome. The Rainbow Crosswalk will help us on the path towards inclusion, literally and figuratively getting us to where we want to go.” Brantford City Council unanimously approved the installation of the Rainbow Crosswalk. More information about the date of installation will be shared at a later date.
