City invites residents to talk about Climate Action

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford invites residents to attend one of two public open houses to review and provide further feedback on the City’s Community Climate Change Action Plan. The first open house takes place on Monday, June 20, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Wilfrid Laurier University Research and Academic Centre, 150 Dalhousie Street. The second open house will take place in City Hall Council Chambers, 58 Dalhousie Street, on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

“The City of Brantford has been taking action against climate change and I’m looking forward to staff sharing that progress with the community,” says Ward 4 Councillor Cheryl Antoski, “City staff have been working collaboratively with residents to determine the steps needed for our community to become a net-zero City by 2050.”

The Let’s Talk About Climate Action campaign was active throughout 2020-2021 and engaged the public in identifying priorities, ideas, and goals to inform the development of a plan to reduce community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The feedback gathered was used to develop the working version of the Community Climate Change Action Plan that will be presented during the two public open houses.

“We want residents and stakeholders to see how far we’ve come and provide additional feedback for how we can take the Brantford Community Climate Change Action Plan a step further,” says Gagan Batra, Manager of Business Support and Sustainability, City of Brantford. “Taking measureable action on climate change will require ongoing collaborative efforts as both a community and as individuals.”

In December 2019, City Council made the Climate Emergency and Imperative Climate Action declaration. This declaration addressed the need for the City of Brantford and all of its residents to reduce the use of fossil fuels and other sources of GHGs. In November 2020, Brantford City Council approved the Corporate Climate Change Action Plan and emissions reduction targets to become a net-zero City by 2050. To complement the corporate targets and actions outlined in this Plan, City staff initiated an intensive community engagement process to develop a Climate Change Action Plan, outlining actions that can be taken by all members of the Brantford community.
