City granted extension of interim injunction order related to 282 Stanley Street

BRANTFORD, ON: On December 8, 2021 an application for an injunction order related to the City property at 282 Stanley Street was filed on behalf of The Corporation of the City of Brantford and initially heard Monday December 13th, 2021.  At that time an interim injunction was granted, and has been extended each time this matter has been before the courts.  Most recently, the judge extended the interim order again until December 29th, 2021 to allow the defendants even more time to seek legal representation and to respond to the City’s motion materials.

The property at 282 Stanley Street has been lawfully owned by the City of Branford for close to a century and the current occupation of individuals on the site since October 9th is unlawful and unsafe. The City’s primary objective continues to be ensuring the safety and well-being of all parties on site. Safety is of particular concern given two recent acts of aggression inflicted on representatives of the City by individuals occupying the site that transpired on December 10th and 11th, 2021. The public is reminded that without safe access to the site, the City is not currently in a position to inspect and/or maintain the lands and ensure suitability for safe public access at this time.  Any activity on the site, including tobogganing is prohibited until further notice.

The injunction obtained by an Order of the Court restrains the named defendants and anyone with knowledge of the Order from trespassing on the property. For the public’s additional reference, a copy of the order has also been placed at the entry of the site.
