City appeals to public for information regarding theft at Brant War Memorial
During an inspection of the Brant War Memorial in the City’s downtown on March 23, City staff discovered that 6 bronze torches had been removed from the revered monument, also known as the Cenotaph, located at the corner of Dalhousie St. and Brant Ave. The torches were installed on the back side of the monument on the “Memorial Gallery” wall featuring the names of fallen soldiers from our area who have given their lives in service of our country.
City staff reported the theft to Brantford Police Service who have since recovered 2 of the 6 torches from a local scrapyard.
The monument, which pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served and continue to serve our country during times of war, military conflict, and peace was originally dedicated in 1933 in honour of those men and women who gave their lives in the service of their country during the first World War. The memorial gallery was added in 1952. On July 2, 1954, the expanded monument was rededicated to also commemorate and honour the fallen of World War II and the Korean War.
The City is appealing to the public for information leading to the recovery of the 4 remaining bronze torches. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Brantford Police at 519-756-0113 or 519-756-7050 or if found, please return to Brantford City Hall at 100 Wellington Square.
