City and Brant County SPCA announce agreement for lands that will house new animal centre
BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford and the Brant County SPCA are pleased to announce the formalization of an agreement that will see the lands known as 10 Kraemer’s Way in Brantford provided to the BCSPCA to house a new animal centre that will include animal adoption rooms, a community room, administration offices and an accessory veterinarian clinic. The vet clinic will provide medical assistance including a spay neuter program required for animals in the care of the BCSPCA. Wellness programs, as well as support services to a new Pets for Life program are also planned in the new 12,000 square foot centre, which will be nearly five times bigger than the current facility.
The Brant County SPCA is a not-for-profit organization that has been providing animal protection and welfare services in the City of Brantford and the County of Brant for over 45 years. These services include providing care for homeless animals, community outreach initiatives, pet adoptions, and humane education and awareness programs.
On August 25, 2020, at the request of BCSPCA, Brantford City Council approved an amendment to the purchase price, reducing it from $225,000 to $1.00 subject to conditions to be met by the SPCA, including that they continue to own and operate the site for a period of 10 years, thus securing BCSPCA’s continued operations in the City of Brantford.
“I am very pleased that the City and the BCSPCA have come together to move this important project forward”, said Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “They provide a vital service to the community so it was both necessary and the right thing for the City to do our part to expedite plans to build the new animal centre.”
The Brant County SPCA is extremely grateful for this generous gift”, said Executive Director of the Brant County SPCA Robin Kuchma. “This is a huge step for our organization and is vital in allowing us to continue our life saving work. Our purpose is to enlighten and enrich the quality of life for our community members and this gift will directly contribute to our capacity to do so. The Brant County SPCA is dedicated to all animals and works towards the goal that all animals in Brantford and beyond with have a kind and safe environment. “This support is essential to our overall project and will help us as we continue to achieve our vision”.
The Brant County SPCA’s Capital Campaign Committee has been hard at work to make the new centre a reality. “This gift is a result of us coming together to work for a better home for the shelter and it’s animals and we are very proud to have the City’s support” said Campaign Chair Lance Calbeck.
“After having worked on this initiative for several years and numerous meetings with Brant County SPCA representatives and members of Council, I’m very glad to see things finally moving forward in such a positive direction”, said Councillor Rick Weaver. “I’m pleased that Council supported this solution and that the SPCA is another step closer to building a much-needed new animal centre to service our community.”
