City activates Emergency Shelter Plan in response to below seasonal temperatures

Emergency housing

Due to the inclement and below seasonal temperatures forecasted tonight and through Friday of this week, the City is activating an emergency shelter plan whereby the Beckett Adult Leisure Centre located at 219 Colborne Street in Brantford (across from the Health and Human Services department located at 220 Colborne), will be available to increase the City’s capacity to shelter those seeking emergency shelter from the cold weather and early winter conditions. Starting this evening Monday, November 11th, emergency shelter services will be in operation in the Beckett Leisure Centre facility from 8:00 pm in the evening until 7:00 am in the morning so as not to overlap with planned programming at the Beckett Centre beginning weekdays at 8:00 am.

It is expected that this facility will be used as an emergency measure for this week only. The City is also in the process of finalizing plans for a Temporary Winter Emergency Shelter for the 2019/2020 winter season. This plan will be shared publicly and considered for final approval at a Special Meeting of Council on November 19th, 2019.

Questions from residents regarding the activation of this week’s Emergency Shelter Plan or the Temporary Winter Emergency Shelter Plan for 2019/2020 should be directed to the City’s Housing Resource Centre at 519-759-3330.
