City achieves significant budget savings through efficient capital project management

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is pleased to announce the successful completion of numerous capital projects, that also demonstrate the City’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and effective budget management. A recent report to the City’s Finance Committee highlights the substantial achievements and efficient financial practices that resulted in significant budget savings for the City.

Between October 2023 and March 2024, the City completed 112 capital projects with an original budget of $55.3 million. Notably, 81 of these projects were completed under budget, returning $6,138,391 (14.0% of the original budget) to the City’s reserves. Projects with an original budget totaling $43.8 million were completed below cost.

Significant Project Highlights

  • Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum Roof Repair: Completed in March 2024, this project involved necessary repairs to ensure the structural integrity of the mausoleum.
  • Drainage Channel Review and Assessment: A comprehensive assessment was conducted to address stormwater flow issues, resulting in a detailed report that will guide future maintenance and restoration efforts.
  • Echo Place Neighbourhood Traffic Review Implementation: This project improved traffic safety in the Echo Place Neighbourhood, establishing a model for future roadway safety enhancements.
  • Road Reconstruction Projects: Significant infrastructure upgrades were successfully completed on Division Street, Seventh Avenue, Whitehead Street, and Fifth Avenue, effectively addressing stormwater management challenges. 

Nine projects with no spending in the last 18 months were closed, returning $4,921,522 to reserves and freeing up $3,683,363 of debt capacity. Additionally, three projects deemed no longer necessary were closed, returning $523,924 to reserves. 

"The City’s ability to complete numerous projects under budget is a testament to our staff’s dedication and strategic planning," said Mayor Kevin Davis. "These savings allow us to reinvest in our community and continue enhancing the quality of services for Brantford residents."
