Brantford to improve trail accessibility and inclusion with new amenities
BRANTFORD, ON – As part of the Accessible Grand River Trail Network initiative, and with generous support from Trans Canada Trail (TCT), new accessibility enhancements are completed across the SC Johnson trails, TH&B Rail Trail, and Gordon Glaves Memorial Parkway trails. These improvements aim to make the trails more inclusive for all users, particularly those with vision and mobility-related disabilities, older adults, and those with health concerns.
The project features the installation of tactile plates at key entry and exit points to aid trail users with vision-related disabilities. Additionally, new benches will be strategically placed across these listed trails to offer safe and convenient resting spots, significantly enhancing the trail experience for people with mobility issues and other health considerations. The installation of trail counters will further allow for accurate monitoring of trail usage, providing essential data to measure the project’s success.
TCT is contributing $50,000, which accounts for 20% of the funding, and the design of the project follows recommendations outlined in the 2021 Trail Safety Audit. Each new feature has been strategically located to maximize community safety.
The Trans Canada Trail is the longest multi-use trail system in the world and it is always growing. It reaches every province and territory, and connects all three of Canada’s coastlines. Each section of the Trans Canada Trail is managed locally and supports different activities and community needs.
Trans Canada Trail is the organization that advocates for stewards and champions Canada’s nationwide trail system. It is a registered charity that receives funding from the Government of Canada (through Parks Canada), various provincial and municipal governments, and generous donors.
