Brantford Neighbourhood Associations are looking for volunteers this winter

BRANTFORD, ON – As winter approaches, the City of Brantford, in partnership with the Neighbourhood Alliance of Brantford, is gearing up for an exciting initiative to spread warmth and cheer throughout our community. We are calling on local heroes to step up and make a difference with our Flood Hero and Snow Buddy programs this winter. Flood Hero volunteers keep the outdoor neighbourhood ice rinks open during the winter months. The Snow Buddy program helps people who need assistance with shoveling snow.

“There is an overwhelming need for community volunteers each winter season,” says Lori-Dawn Cavin, Manager, Community Recreation and Events. “It’s through the generous support of local volunteers that we are able to operate the neighbourhood rinks as well as support those in need when it snows.”

Flood Hero volunteers help to create and maintain an average of 20 neighbourhood ice ricks throughout the City. We’re looking for passionate individuals to take on to help provide families with additional outdoor recreational opportunities like ice skating and hockey each winter. Flood heroes are responsible for making ice, flooding the rinks, clearing snow, inspections and park cleanliness which is invaluable in keeping our rinks ready for winter fun. Snow Buddy volunteers help neighbours in need of shoveling snow on sidewalks, crosswalks and driveways after a snowfall. Over 500 residents have requested Snow Buddy support this winter and volunteers are desperately needed. Those requesting assistance are 65 years of age or older or have a disability that prohibits them from safely clearing snow. Please consider volunteering to be a Snow Buddy - a friendly face that clears the path for a safer and more enjoyable winter season.

High school community service hours will apply where applicable. References are also available upon request for those that have volunteered.
