Brantford breaks development record with more than $225 million in construction

BRANTFORD, ON – Brantford is having its biggest construction year in history. The year-to-date construction value for 2020 is $225.258 million, which already exceeds the previous yearly record of $211.828 million set in 2005.

“This year has already eclipsed the highest yearly construction values ever attained in Brantford,” says Andy McMahon, Chief Building Official, Director of Building Services. “We have two more months of reporting for the year and we anticipate the strong values will continue.”

The City released its October 2020 Report on Construction Activity demonstrating a construction value of $18.717 million for 72 permits issued, which is well above the 5-year average for this time period. Increases were seen in the Industrial, Commercial, Institutional and Government, Duplex, Triplex, Fourplex (New) and the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) sectors of construction.

The largest increase occurred in the Industrial sector of construction. Five building permits were issued for projects with a total construction value of $10.856 million. An increase also occurred in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) sector which saw a total construction value of $2.280 million for October.

The City’s year-to-date construction value of $225.258 million is almost 30 per cent above last year’s total of $173.755 million for the same time period.
