AMO 2021 Conference yields productive results for City of Brantford
BRANTFORD, ON – From August 16-18, 2021, Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis joined 1,400 participants in the Association of Municipalities of Ontario's 2021 AMO Conference.
In addition to Mayor Kevin Davis, the Brantford Delegation included Councillor Cheryl Antoski, Councillor Greg Martin, Councillor John Utley, CAO Brian Hutchings, Public Works General Manager Inderjit Hans, General Manager of People, Legislated Services, Heidi DeVries and Planning and Chief of Staff, Sasha Hill.
Over the course of a series of meetings and discussions held during this year’s virtual conference, the Brantford Delegation met with various provincial ministers and parliamentary assistants including the Honourable Minister of Health, Christine Elliott, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Parliamentary Assistant, Andrea Khanjin, and Minister of Natural Resources Parliamentary Assistant Mike Harris.
Among the positive outcomes of the meeting with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks was a commitment that the Honourable David Piccini, Minister would visit the City’s landfill in response to the City’s request that the Province invest in developing an organic waste processing hub in Brantford in partnership with surrounding municipalities. This would be an essential component of a green bin recycling program. The City confirmed with MOE staff that we have consulted with surrounding municipalities about forming an “organics processing hub” that would service Brantford, Brant County, Haldimand County, Norfolk County and Six Nations of the Grand River who have all expressed interest in developing a partnership in building organics processing capacity (stationed in Brantford) using anaerobic digestion technology. Preliminary data shows that Brant County, Norfolk County and Haldimand County along with Brantford are anticipated to transition their blue box program in 2024, presenting a unique opportunity to develop the organics waste processing hub in partnership.
The meeting with the Ministry of Natural Resources focused on the City’s requests related to flood remediation including, infrastructure upgrades, monitoring systems, valves, Environmental Assessments, clearing and debris removal, flood walls and training. Based on Provincial growth projections, the City is forecasted to grow by an additional 65,000 people and 80,000 jobs by 2051. Growth in Brantford in that time period will occur through a combination of intensification within the Built-Up Area of the City, including Downtown Brantford, and development within new Greenfield Areas in the expansion lands. In anticipation of the growth in the floodplain area, expediting flood remediation projects remain a priority for the City.
The meeting with the Honourable Minister of Health, Christine Elliott focused on seeking Ministry support for the Brant Community Healthcare’s Planning committee as it moves forward plans for expanding and upgrading the community’s hospital capacity. Mayor Kevin Davis is an active member of the Community Healthcare Planning Committee.
For 120 years, Ontario’s largest municipal conference has brought together municipal, provincial and federal officials to work collectively to overcome municipal challenges and plan for the future. Mayor Kevin Davis continues to serve on the AMO Board of Directors – Large Urban Caucus. As a Board member, Mayor Davis brings Brantford’s voice to the table by consistently raising issues specific to Brantford’s interests, and contribute to AMO’s commitment to advance the mutual interests of Ontario municipalities.
