Two workers at Mohawk Street Landfill test positive for COVID-19

BRANTFORD, ON – Today, the Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) declared a workplace outbreak at the Mohawk Street Landfill after two workers tested positive for COVID-19. A workplace outbreak is declared when there are two or more laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases with an epidemiological link in the workplace within a 14-day period, where cases could have reasonably acquired their infection in the workplace.

Based on BCHU’s investigation, health officials believe all customers/visitors are at low risk of transmission. Public interactions with contracted workers at the Landfill are typically very brief, and takes place outdoors. The City is fully cooperating and following all COVID-19 preventative measures as directed by the Health Unit.

As per typical case and contact management protocols, the contracted individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 have been directed to self-isolate for 10 more days. All others who identified as close contacts have also been notified and advised to stay home and isolate if symptoms appear.

The City of Brantford takes the health and safety of the public we serve, our employees and contracted workers very seriously. With BCHU approval, the Mohawk Street Landfill will remain open. Any members of the public who visited the Landfill site between the period of November 5 – November 15, 2021 who are concerned about a possible exposure or is experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, can contact the Brant Community Healthcare System to arrange for assessment and testing.
