Pieces for Peace event to honour Human Rights Day 2024
BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford, in partnership with the Laurier Hub for Community Solutions and the Brantford Immigration Partnership, will be hosting the fourth iteration of the seasonal Pieces 4 Peace series on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus, in 97 Dalhousie Street, room DAL007.
Through a concept proposed by Imam Abu Noman Tarek with the Muslim Association, Pieces 4 Peace launched in the fall of 2024 bringing community members together to share in learning and connection across cultural and social differences. Throughout the past year, the series has showcased presentations that have spanned themes of newcomer inclusion, the Two Row Wampum, storytelling as a tool for community-building, and intersections of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion.
The winter 2024 edition of Pieces 4 Peace marks the annual observance of the United Nations Human Rights Day, which is also the final day of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The following event presenters will be speaking to the theme of human rights:
- Carrie Sinkowski, Community Developer, Community Legal Clinic - Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk
- Tariq Ismati, Senior Director Newcomer and Employment Services, Wesley
- Dr. Stacey Hannem, Professor, Wilfrid Laurier University in the Department of Criminology
“Pieces 4 Peace invites neighbours to come together and meet people in the community they may not have otherwise crossed paths with,” says Taylor Berzins, Community Initiatives Coordinator with the City of Brantford. “Through spending time together, we can start to understand each other better, and begin to cultivate a sense of shared peace in our community.”
Pieces 4 Peace supports the guiding principles outlined in the City of Brantford’s Inclusive Community Plan by providing opportunities for residents from diverse background to connect around each other’s stories and perspectives.
All are welcome at this free event; light refreshments will be served. To register, please visit bit.ly/16DaysofActivism2024
