Brantford City Council approves 2025-2027 Healthy Aging Strategy
BRANTFORD, ON – At their Committee of the Whole meeting held on November 5, 2024, Brantford City Council unanimously approved the 2025-2027 Healthy Aging Strategy. The updated strategy outlines 20 priority actions across eight domains established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to enhance opportunities for older adults to participate and have a sense of belonging in the City of Brantford.
The 2025-2027 Healthy Aging Strategy was developed with a variety of community partners and through consultation with older adults and caregivers. The City will continue to work collaboratively with partners, organizations and community groups to implement the strategy over the next three years, through the following initiatives:
- Development of a Seniors’ Art Series
- Projects to increase physical accessibility of City amenities and spaces
- Creation and launch of an Anti-ageism campaign
- Increase availability of intergenerational programming
- Develop additional affordable housing units that are accessible to older adults
- Launch of a Seniors’ Resource Fair
- Continue to work with the Laurier Hub for Community Solutions, Grand River Community Health Care Centre, Grand River Council on Aging and other stakeholders to consult and engage with older adults
As a result of the significant milestones our community has achieved regarding healthy aging, the City of Brantford continues to be internationally recognized by the World Health Organization as an Age-Friendly community.
Brantford City Council also received the final 2022-2024 Healthy Aging Strategy report with 93 per cent of its targets being achieved. This report highlighted numerous successes, including:
- Addition of over 40 km of accessible public sidewalks
- Completion of 117 housing units accessible to seniors (with 160 in progress)
- Development of an Age-Friendly Event Planning Guide
- Community programming such as National Nutrition Month, Healthy Aging Passport, and Let’s Get Moving
- Completion of 21 capital initiatives projects that increased accessibility at City facilities
- Release of the 2024 Senior’s Toolkit
“The Healthy Aging Strategy represents the City’s commitment to our ongoing efforts of collaborating with community partners to deliver high quality age-friendly programming and events,” says City of Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “On behalf of City Council, I want to sincerely thank our partners and staff for continuing to make Brantford a more accessible and inclusive community for older adults.”
