Balmoral Drive Bike Lane Project
Connecting the cycling network to residential neighbourhoods
Our goal is to create an established cycling network to support a safer environment and encourage Active Transportation. Balmoral Drive is identified in the City’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) as one of the many cycling corridors across Brantford. These bike lanes will provide a necessary connection to the existing bike lanes on Oxford Street. Bicycle facilities are also proposed on Ewing Drive, Tollgate Road and Ava Road for 2022.
What will these changes look like?
Curb to curb road widths will remain the same-there will be no modifications to sidewalks or private properties. Traffic control at intersections along the corridor will remain the same.
Existing cross-section on Balmoral Drive
The current cross-section of Balmoral Drive consists of one 6.67 metre wide vehicle travel lane in each direction. Cyclists have to share these lanes with motorists.
Proposed cross-section on Balmoral Drive
The proposed changes include one 1.7 metre wide bicycle lane and one 3.3 metre wide vehicular lane in each direction, with a 2.1 metre wide dedicated parking lane on the side of the road with even-numbered addresses. Buffers will be provided between the bike lane and the parking lane to eliminate dooring. Dooring is when a cyclist is struck by someone opening their vehicle door. Additionally, buffers will be provided between bike lanes and vehicle lanes with flexible bollards separating cyclists from vehicles on the south/west side of the street to provide additional protection.
