Bulk Item Pick Up

Please note that furniture, appliances or other bulk items cannot be put out for collection with your regular household garbage. However, we are pleased to provide a free pick up service for these items. If you are a City resident, you can schedule a free pick up of your bulk items with seven days’ notice. This service is not available to businesses.

The following items are NOT collected curbside and are therefore NOT eligible for a bulk pick up:

Construction Waste/Renovation/Building Materials
This includes  concrete, asphalt, bricks, drywall, railway ties, etc. You may take these materials to the Mohawk Street Landfill for disposal, tipping fees will apply.
Electronic Equipment
You may take electronic equipment (computers, monitors, televisions, printers, VCR/DVD players, etc.) to the Mohawk Street Landfill for disposal free of charge.
Furnaces/Hot Tubs/Water Heaters/Water Softeners
You may take furnaces, hot tubs, and water softeners to the Mohawk Street Landfill for disposal, tipping fees will apply.
Household Hazardous Waste
You may dispose of household hazardous waste material during Hazardous Waste Day Events at the Mohawk Street Landfill, free of charge.
Tires
Tires (on or off rim) can be taken to the Mohawk Street Landfill for disposal free of charge.

How to prepare your bulk items

Mattresses
Mattresses and box springs must be fully wrapped in plastic.
Appliances containing CFCs (refrigerators, dehumidifiers, freezers etc.)
  • Must be tagged by a licensed refrigerant handler indicating that it no longer contains any refrigerant materials (i.e. CFC's)
  • Companies providing this service can be found in the yellow pages under refrigeration servicing
  • Items not tagged will NOT be collected
  • Remove or secure appliance doors
 Playground equipment (metal)
  • Break down any (metal) swing sets, slides, etc.
  • All materials must be securely bundled and tied and able to be easily handled
  • Weight limit of 25kg (55lbs) per bundle
  • Bundles should not exceed 1.2m (4 feet) in length and have a maximum diameter of less than 0.9m (3 feet)
Wood materials/Wooden fence
  •  All wood materials must be securely bundled and tied and able to be easily handled
  • Bundles should not exceed 1.2m (4 feet) in length and have a maximum diameter of less than 0.9m (3 feet)
  • Weight limit of 25kg (55lbs) per bundle
  • Loose material will NOT be collected
  • Please note: For the safety of everyone, please remove or bend over all nails, screws or sharp edges.
Metal fence
  •  All metal materials must be securely bundled and tied and able to be easily handled
  • Bundles should not exceed 1.2m (4 feet) in length and have a maximum diameter of less than 0.9m (3 feet)
  • Weight limit of 25kg (55lbs) per bundle
  • Loose metal material will NOT be collected
  • Properly prepared materials will be accepted at curbside

Carpet and under padding
  • Carpet/under padding must be securely bundled and tied and able to be easily handled
  • Bundles should not exceed 1.2m (4 feet) in length and have a maximum diameter of less than 0.9m (3 feet)
  • Weight limit of 25kg (55lbs) per bundle
  • Items contaminated with bed bugs must be wrapped in plastic in order to be collected at the curb
  • Loose material will NOT be collected
Pool cover/liner/solar blanket
  • All materials must be securely bundled and tied and able to be easily handled
  • Bundles should not exceed 1.2m (4 feet) in length and have a maximum diameter of less than 0.9m (3 feet)
  • Weight limit of 25kg (55lbs) per bundle
  • Loose material will NOT be collected
Furniture and décor containing glass
  •  Glass must be taped corner to corner with an X or wrapped or boxed separately for safety.
  • Label the box 'BROKEN GLASS' before placing it out at the curb.

You can request this pick up at your curbside twice a year:

  1. January to June (once only)
  2. July to December (once only)

Personal information collected to service a Bulk Item Pick Up Request is collected under the authority of Section 10(1) of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c.25, as amended and will be used to contact you concerning your service request/inquiry to the City of Brantford.
