Let's Get Moving and Mindful

The Let’s Get Moving and Mindful campaign is a collaboration between the City of Brantford and its community partners, which features a variety of free activities to encourage older adults to focus on physical, social, and mental wellbeing throughout the month of October.  The 2024 Let’s Get Moving & Mindful series offers nine programs:

Let's Do S.A.F.E Zone 

Mondays and Wednesdays in October from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

A Falls Prevention based exercise program, that combines of sitting and standing exercises, with an emphasis on balance and strength. Clients will be utilizing TheraBand’s mainly, if you have them, please bring to the class. Program takes place at Knights of Columbus, located at 12 Catharine Ave.

No registration is required but please check the S.A.F.E Zone website prior to attending as changes often come up unexpectedly. Liability forms will be required to fill out on site.

Let's Grow Your Garden - registration is FULL

Friday, October 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. 

Similar to humans, plants are living beings that need love and nurturing to grow. During this guided session, participants will have the opportunity to pot a succulent, decorate the pot, and create jewelry for their plant. They will be able to take their plants home and care for them. The session aims to foster the connection between caring for a plant and oneself, while also promoting social connections among participants. Program takes place at the Grand River Community Health Centre, Courtyard.

Let's Do Healthy Aging Chair Yoga - registration is FULL

Thursday, October 10, 17 & 24 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Join Modo Yoga for our Healthy Aging Chair Yoga Session’s. Healthy aging includes moving our bodies and taking care of our minds, creating the mind to body connection. This can help alleviate stress and boost positivity. Program takes place at T.B. Costain/SC Johnson Community Centre. No experience needed.

Let's Experience Music and Movement 

Friday, October 11 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Led by Brantford’s renowned Joan Minnery, who has a Master of Arts in Community Music and is a certified dance and fitness instructor, this session will combine the benefits of music and movement. Participants will dance to their favourite songs and play small percussion instruments. Music is healing for the mind, body, and soul, and the session will encourage everyone to use music and movement to connect with themselves and others. All you need to bring is yourself and a bottle of water! Program takes place at the Grand River Community Health Centre.

Let’s P-aint Away - registration is FULL

Wednesday, October 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Intentionally named, participants will be encouraged to paint the pain away, fostering a space to view painting as a form of healing and stress relief. The session will be led by Dianne from Grand River Community Health Centre, who finds peace and joy from painting. Beginners are welcome and encouraged. Program takes place at Grand River Community Health Centre, Community Room B.

Let's Get Social 

Saturday, October 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join Golden Age Management to engage in a social gathering that encourages connection and networking with others through simple social cues and activities. Program takes place at Woodman Park Community Centre. Registration required.

Let's Try Dance Fit 

Wednesday, October 23 & 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Formerly known as Zumba, this is a dance-based class that involves moving to the music to get in a great cardio workout. No experience necessary! Program takes place at T.B. Costain/SC Johnson Community Centre.

Let's Try Brain Bingo - registration is FULL

Wednesday, October 23 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

In this session, we'll mix the fun of BINGO with discussions about mental health and well-being. Instead of using the usual numbers, the BINGO cards will feature letters or words related to specific mental health terms. This will be a chance for participants to learn new terminology while enjoying themselves. Prizes will be available. Program takes place at T.B. Costain/SC Johnson Community Centre.

Let's Prioritize Your Mental Wellbeing 

Thursday, October 24th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Mental health and wellbeing are just as important as physical health and wellbeing. Join Lill to learn about different personality types and how they can help or hinder your reaction to stress, engage in interactive activities such as mindfulness and deep breathing techniques – and learn practical ways to manage your stress. Programs takes place a T.B. Costain/S.C. Johnson Community Centre.
