Public Nuisance By-law
In an effort to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors, a public nuisance by-law has come into effect to reduce social misbehaviour.
As outlined in the Public Nuisance By-law, you cannot act in a way that creates a disturbance, damages property or impacts the safety of residents of the City. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Public urination and defecation;
- Spitting;
- Using profane or obscene language or gestures;
- Odours caused by the consumption of cannabis in public places that infringes or causes a detrimental effect on a member of the public;
- Disorderly conduct;
- Public drunkenness and intoxication;
- Unlawful sale, furnishing or distribution of alcoholic beverages or illegal or controlled substances;
- Damage to or destruction of public or private property, including the knocking over of objects such as mailboxes and newspaper boxes;
- And public disturbances, including public brawls or public fights.
Enforcement
City of Brantford by-law officers are responsible for enforcement of the Public Nuisance By-law. A ticket and fine will be issued to those who do not follow the law with a maximum fine of $5,000.
