Empey Street Bike Lane Project
Connecting the cycling network in industrial areas
Our goal is to create an established cycling network to support a safer environment and encourage Active Transportation. Empey Street is identified in Brantford's Transportation Master Plan (TMP) as one of the many cycling corridors across the City. These bike lanes will provide a north-south connection to the Henry Street bike lanes and the multi-use path that is proposed to be installed on Elgin Street in 2022.
What will these changes look like?
Curb to curb road widths will remain the same-there will be no modifications to sidewalks or private properties. Traffic control at intersections along the corridor will remain the same.
Existing cross-section on Empey Street
The current cross-section of Empey Street consists of one 5.3 metre wide vehicle travel lane in each direction. Cyclists have to share these lanes with motorists.
Proposed cross-section on Empey Street
The proposed changes include one 1.5 metre wide bicycle lane and one 3.5 metre wide vehicular lane in each direction, with a buffer lane physically separating the bike lane from the vehicle lanes with bike curbs and flexible bollards.
