Water Conservation

Conserving water helps everyone. It can lower your utility bills , help the environment, and aid in water sustainability for the future.

Watering restrictions

The Water Conservation bylaw helps us manage the outdoor water usage of residents. 

Under the bylaw, watering between June 1st and August 31st is restricted to specific dates and times as follows:

  • 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • If you have an odd-numbered address, you can only water on odd-numbered calendar days.
  • If you have an even-numbered address, you can only water on even-numbered calendar days.

The following activities are prohibited as they are considered wasting of water:

  • Excessive puddling
  • Runoff or overspray of irrigation water to paved surfaces excessive washing of driveways
  • Use of water for the purposes of irrigation when it is raining is similarly prohibited as it is consider

Overnight watering option

Overnight watering is available by calling and registering with the City of Brantford. Residents choosing this option must comply with the even/odd day watering rule and watering must be done only between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in exchange for the normal daytime watering hours. Furthermore, this new watering time applies to your entire property.

Residents who register for overnight watering are not required to register the following year. To register, or remove your address from the registry, please call 519-759-4150.

Exemptions

  • Watering cans and pitchers filled from your tap can be used anytime.
  • Watering of potted plants and hanging planters can be done anytime
  • Newly seeded/sodded lawns and planted gardens are exempted from the watering restrictions for 30-days from the date of planting. It is advised that residents keep applicable receipts during the exemption period.
  • For 24 hours following the application of fertilizer, herbicide or pesticide, unrestricted watering is allowed.
  • Use of water for recreational purposes, including sprinkler pads and swimming pools, is allowed anytime.
  • Washing vehicles in a residential zone is allowed at any time provided the hose is equipped with shut-off spray nozzle or a bucket of water is used with a sponge/rag.
