Lead Financial Incentive Program
The City of Brantford's Lead Financial Incentive Program includes a grant of up to $1,500 to help with the cost of replacing lead sections in your water service. We also offer a loan of up to $3,000 for eligible work. Your application must be approved before any work begins.
Scheduling an inspection
You must schedule an inspection of your lead water service before and after your work. This includes scheduling a lead test at least 72 hours before you replace anything.
Please call 519-759-4150 to schedule an appointment. Our lead testing and inspection services are available at no charge for all properties in Brantford. This service is available Monday to Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (excluding holidays).
Eligible and ineligible work
Work that's eligible for the Program includes:
- contractors' labour;
- excavation;
- pipe materials and connection to the curb stop; and
- connecting the new service to your water meter
Repaving a driveway, landscaping, sodding or any other costs that are unnecessary to replace the lead service line are not eligible.
Applying to the program
You can apply for Lead Financial Incentive Program online and make sure to include at least one quote from a City of Brantford licensed contractor. We recommend getting a quote from two or three contractors in order to find the lowest price.
The City of Brantford does not endorse the services of any Contractor that performs lead service replacement. To view a list of Plumbing and Sewer Drain Contractors please visit the City of Brantford's Business Licensing Page.
If you're applying for the grant only, you will receive a Commitment Letter after approval that outlines the terms and conditions of the program.
If applying for the grant and loan, you will receive the Commitment Letter and Promissory Note after the work has been completed.
Please note that you application must be approved before you begin replacing the lead line.
Payment details
After you receive City approval and once your contractor replaces the lead water service, make sure to send us a copy of the invoice that details all eligible expenses.
We will advance the grant and loan amounts in one payment directly to the contractor. We add the loan payments and interest to your water and wastewater account over a period of five or ten years as a special charge (Lead Water Service Loan). The loan's interest is fixed for its duration.
Lead Filter Program
Apply for our Lead Filter Program to receive filters that can help you protect vulnerable household members. To be eligible, you must have a confirmed private lead water service pipe and at least one member of the vulnerable population must reside in the household for at least six months of the calendar year. The vulnerable population includes expecting mothers and children under the age of six years old.
Water filters can be used with a standard faucet only
While water filters help to reduce lead levels in tap water, we strongly recommend replacing your lead water service pipes as a permanent solution.
