How to amend a birth certificate?
If a birth has been registered in Ontario and the parents wish to amend the information recorded on the registration, application forms must be obtained from the Office of the Registrar General, 189 Red River Road, PO Box 4600, Thunder Bay, Ontario P7B 6L8. How can I obtain a birth certificate for myself or my child?

What happens to older birth records?
The Office of the Registrar General maintains records for births which occurred in Ontario during the past 95 years. For information on older records you should refer to the Archives of Ontario at: [ ] The Archives currently holds birth records from July, 1869 to December, 1910. Each year another year of records is sent to the Archives for microfilming and eventual public access.
What happens after a statement of live birth is submitted?
When you complete the on-line birth registration, the Office of the Registrar General will complete the registration. They will match your child’s registration with information submitted by the hospital, birthing centre or Midwife and verify all information for accuracy. The registration process can take 10 to 16 weeks from the date the birth took place. Once the child has been registered and if you applied for a birth certificate at the time of registration, the ORG will then forward the birth certificate for your child to you. If you are registering your child by completing the paper Statement of Live Birth and mailing it directly to the Office of the Registrar General, the ORG will match and verify the information for accuracy. Once the birth has been registered, the ORG will issue a Notice of Birth Registration which will be mailed to the address given on the Statement of Live Birth. Once this Notice has been received, you may then apply for a birth certificate for your child.
What are the fees for a birth certificate?
First birth certificate - (2.5” x 3.75”) $25.00 - Replacement birth certificate - $35.00 - First certified copy of birth certificate - (8.5” x 14”) $35.00 - Replacement certified copy of birth - $45.00 - Delayed registration of birth - $50.00 - Confirmation letter (5 year search) - $15.00 - Amendment to original registration - $22.00 to $37.00 - There is an additional $30.00 surcharge for each document requested for Emergency Service and Premium OnLine Service. How do I receive a birth certificate quickly and avoid the wait for the normal processing time?
The Office of the Registrar General offers special service levels when a certificate must be issued immediately. Emergency Service takes 2 business days plus delivery. There is a $30.00 surcharge for this service level. Proof of Urgency* must be provided before an application will be processed for the emergency service level. Emergency Service can only be applied for in person at the Toronto Office located at: ServiceOntario College Park, 777 Bay Street Toronto, Ontario M5G 2C8 Business Hours are: Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm *Proof of Urgency may include: - A medical emergency - A letter confirming new employment - A letter from a consulate or embassy confirming an appointment - Airline tickets - A letter confirming an appointment for an immigration hearing - Travel reservations - A wedding invitation where the applicant is the bride or groom. How can I obtain a temporary birth letter or travel letter for a newborn?
With the introduction of the electronic birth registration format, travel letters or temporary birth letters for newborns will no longer be issued by the City of Brantford.
