FLOOD UPDATE - FEBRUARY 23, 2018 - 3:30 PM

BRANTFORD ON: As announced on February 22 at 5:30 pm, the Flood Evacuation Order has been lifted for the City of Brantford while the State of Emergency Declaration remains in effect until such a time as the City can more properly assess the extent of damage caused by the event. The Emergency Operation Centre is now focusing efforts on transitioning from response to recovery mode.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) confirmed that based on recent gauge readings, river levels continued to drop overnight measuring 2.9 metres at 2:00 pm, whereas they were 6.99 m high at their peak during the flood event.

ROAD CLOSURES STILL IN EFFECT

  • Dufferin Ave. (dead end to Wilks Dam)
  • Gilkison (Elliot to Catherine)
  • Birkett Lane (River Road to Mohawk)

The trail system in the affected area will remain closed for the foreseeable future until they can be maintained and re-inspected.

Additionally, there will be temporary closures on Grand River Ave and other streets in the impacted area based on ongoing assessments of the area.

While residents can access their homes by foot on closed roads, vehicular access may be restricted due to debris that is currently being cleared.

UTILITIES UPDATE

As of 9:00 am this morning, Brantford Power has confirmed that electricity has been restored to a majority of the homes in the impacted area.

Union Gas began restoring connections to the impacted area overnight with the intention to have a majority of customers restored by the end of today. Reinforcements from other communities have been called in to assist with the effort.

EVACUATION SHELTERS

The Assumption College Evacuation Centre is now closed while Woodman Community Centre will remain open until noon on Saturday February 24th, 2018.

INSURANCE RELATED ENQUIRIES

Representatives from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) will be in Brantford this weekend to assist residents impacted by the Feb 21-22, 2018 flooding event at:

Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre – 333 Erie Ave
Saturday Feb 24 – 10am to 5pm
Sunday Feb 25 – 1pm to 5pm

IBC will assist affected residents by answering insurance related questions, and helping to connect them with their insurance companies. Residents are asked to bring their insurance policies, but guidance can still be provided if policies are not available.

Alternatively, affected residents with questions can call IBC’s Consumer Information Centre at 1-844-2ask-IBC (1-844-227-5422).

For those who may not have flood insurance, our provincial partners from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs who will determine if residents impacted by the flood event are eligible for the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians. Representatives from the Ministry will be in impacted areas on Sunday February 25th to complete an assessment.

ENHANCED GARBAGE COLLECTION IN EVACUATION AREA

Contractors will be in effected neighbourhoods DAILY starting at 7:00 am on Saturday, Feb 24th until Friday, March 2nd to collect bulky items curbside.

Residents DO NOT NEED to register for these pick-ups however regular program details still apply.

VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS

Members of the community who wish to contribute monetary donations, food items, hygiene products or cleaning items can drop them off at any of the following:

Community Resource Services (Brantford Food Bank) during their regular operating hours

Salvation Army Thrift Store will accept clothing, diapers, personal items and cleaning items (no furniture or appliances please) at their thrift store at 67 Charing Cross St during regular business hours

If flood victims do not require donations that have already been made to the Salvation Army or The Food Bank, please note that they may be used for other members of the community who are in need.
