2017-2018 Park Playground Renovations

Construction has begun on the 2017-2018 Park Renovations. The three neighbourhood parks in this phase of renovations include:

  • Cameron Heights Park
  • Lynden Hills Park
  • Parsons Park

Please find details on each location's renovation below and check back regularly for updates as this project continues over the summer of 2018.

PARSON'S PARK

Parson's Park is the first to undergo construction and is well underway. This new playground in Eagle Place is scheduled to be complete mid-July and will be a great addition to the park. Please find the playground design below:

The renovations will include new and accessible paved asphalt paths to and around the playground, a paved path connecting Parson's Ave to Ontario Street, a large area for senior play equipment (ages 5-12), a small play area for junior play equipment (ages 2-5), a large sand play area, 3 bay swing set (with 3 belt swings, 2 tot swings and one accessible swing), a grass picnic area and a half court asphalt basketball pad. It will also include new benches, garbage cans, trees and fun berms to relax on or ride your bike over!

The new playground will be relocated slightly West of the existing playground to ensure a minimum 15m setback from residential properties is maintained and the playground remains far back from Ontario Street.

CAMERON HEIGHTS PARK

Cameron Heights Park will be the second playground to undergo renovation this year. Construction is expected to start in July pending there are no delays at our first location of the season.

The park renovations will include new and accessible paved asphalt paths to and around the playground, a paved circuit path around the park for exercise and connecting paths from North Park Street to both Trillium Way and Blackfriar Lane. The new playground will include a large area for senior play equipment (ages 5-12), a small play area for junior play equipment (ages 2-5), a large sand play area, a nature area to encourage children to engage their surrounding environment, a 3 bay swing set (with 3 belt swings, 2 tot swings and one accessible swing) and a half court asphalt basketball pad. It will also include new benches, garbage cans, trees and fun berms to relax on or ride your bike over!

The new playground will be relocated from its existing location to a more visible and accessible location along North Park Street. This relocation was prompted by information gathered during the community consultation process where concerns of vandalism, loitering and drug use were discovered as a common occurrence around the existing playground which was located in a dark corner of the park with limited sight lines from residential homes and no visibility from surrounding streets. While playgrounds in the past were designed to be placed far back into a park as a sort of “retreat” or “destination” within a larger space, the standards and methods of design have changed to encourage high visibility from municipal roads and sidewalks, high visibility from residences to increase natural surveillance and open/accessible sightlines throughout.

Following Crime Prevention through Environmental  Design (CPTED) guidelines and taking into account available space restrictions, Parks & Recreation Staff determined the North Park Street entrance as the most suitable location for a new playground. This location reflects a good street presence, has the greatest opportunity for community surveillance and allows for easy access to the playground from North Park Street. It also allows enough space to maintain a minimum 15m setback from all residential properties.

LYNDEN HILLS PARK

Lynden Hills Park will be the third playground to undergo renovation this year. Construction is expected to start in August pending there are no delays at our first two locations of the season.

The park renovations will include new and accessible paved asphalt paths to and around the playground, a large area for senior play equipment (ages 5-12), a small play area for junior play equipment (ages 2-5), a large sand play area, a nature area to encourage children to engage their surrounding environment, a 3 bay swing set (with 3 belt swings, 2 tot swings and one accessible swing) and a large grass picnic area. It will also include new benches, garbage cans, trees and fun berms to relax on or ride your bike over!

The new playground will be placed in a similar location as the existing equipment but will spread out around the existing multi-use asphalt pad for a more cohesive layout and use of space.

We are very excited to see this renovations blossom from the community feedback received so many months ago and will keep updating this webpage as each playground comes to life!

Be sure to check back here when your playground is nearing completion for our opening celebration information. See you then!
